Reed Park Zoo’s meerkat crowd has grown with the birth of two meerkat puppies.
According to the zoo, meerkat puppies are born with their eyes closed and very little hair. They also spend the first several weeks of their lives being close to their mom and dad.
Now that the pups are several weeks old, the zoo said they are able to explore a little more on their own.
“The new parents and pups are spending some of their time in the rear of their habitat while the pups are still in their early stages of development,” Zoo Operations Director Sue Tygilski said in a news release. release. “The family shows up to guests from time to time when the pups are searching but often prefers to sleep behind the scenes.”
Earlier this week, the puppies visited the exterior of their habitat for the first time. The zoo said the two pups are a “vigilant pair” and mainly lived in the entrance to the residence as their parents enjoyed the outdoors.

“The most exciting thing to see is that meerkat pups begin to practice the skills of all adult meerkats like digging,” Tygilski said. “Small pups have to balance while digging their front legs and often the initial effort is less than right, resulting in a fall over. Over time they become stronger and more coordinated.”
