On this M’sian job site, employers don’t pay the fees—job seekers do. The founders explain.

What do you do when looking for a job? The simple answer is to visit the many job-hunting platforms available in Malaysia.

They are free anyway, and for many job seekers, there isn’t much to lose by applying extensively for jobs and seeing what sticks.

While job seekers do not feel the effects of this behavior, employers do. Recruiters have many job applications, some of which do not even fit the requirements of the job or do not have the necessary skills.

How? Job seekers will have to pay a registration fee to use the portal (but more on that later).

For those unaware, most job portals require employers to pay a fee, sometimes in the form of credit, for posting job advertisements. This isn’t a problem for most companies, but it can be for small businesses operating at minimal cost.

While there may be free alternatives like LinkedIn and Facebook, companies with more funding are able to pay a fee to “promote” their job ad so it will be seen with more eyes. Meaning, less eyes on non-payers. That’s how the algorithm works.

Using a free job portal also means that employers have no way of filtering applicants who see job ads. In return, job seekers can apply for any of the openings as I mentioned earlier.

Thus, JobJom makes it free for employers to post job ads in an unbiased manner where “boosts” do not exist. This is in the hope of facilitating a niche where there is an abundance of job postings in companies from small to large, regardless of industry or position they are looking for.

Of course, employers who want better and faster results are offered a one-of-a-kind headhunting feature on JobJom called TalentMore. It is a paid and self-service feature of the platform for registered employers to search their own candidates by setting filters on the platform’s talent pool.

Employers paying for talent credits can then download profiles of their potential employees to find out if they are suitable for the job posting and a fit in their company. It costs one talent credit to access a profile.

The packages for Talent Credit are:

  • RM99 gives you 10 talent credits, valid for 30 days;
  • RM199 gives you 25 talent credits, valid for 90 days;
  • RM299 gives you 40 talent credits, valid for 180 days.

Using JOBJOM’s TalentMore feature is an alternative to hiring a headhunter to find the exact candidate an employer is looking for.

According to the team at JOBJOM, headhunters charge a success fee equal to one month’s salary or up to 25% of the annual income of the successful recruit. The higher the position (for example, a manager), the higher the fee.

“When we have a sufficient job-searching database, this feature will be promoted more strongly,” the JOBJOM team said.

Charging a registration fee of RM9.90 (which is charged annually) to job seekers to use the JOBJOM platform from the start to filter out only serious job candidates. “RM9.90 is the equivalent of a McD or Burger King meal, a Starbucks coffee,” joked Will Ong and Lennon Chu.

Believing that JOBJOM’s portal will have an abundance of job listings by allowing companies to post them for free, he believes this is an incentive for job seekers to pay the fee. On top of that, candidates with two or more years of work experience will be featured on TalentMore so employers can find and hire them.

The job portal also has a refer-a-friend program where registered people can share their unique link with others for a validity period of 12 months. Each successful registration through their link will earn them RM1.

Job seekers on JOBJOM will also be provided access to the platform’s Knowledge Hub and Download Center. “These will help prepare candidates with information for their next big interview, or tips for improving resumes and cover letters,” the team explained.

Content will also be constantly updated and fully accessible with a registered account. ,[This is] A perk is only available on JOBJOM, as other platforms charge per content access,” claimed the team.

But there are plenty of free articles out there that have been published about the same repetitive “tips for your job interview,” or “common resume mistakes you should avoid.” It’s hard to imagine that the content of JOBJOM would be any different or payable.

“We want to compile the content in a one-stop centre. There may be free content elsewhere, but a serious job seeker will search, not be lazy,” JOBJOM’s team argued. “We realized that companies today need more than just work-related experiences. “

Freelancers can also find value in JOBJOM as it also provides an advertising-based model to advertise their work for a fee:

  • RM29.90 for 30 days;
  • RM99.90 for 180 days;
  • RM169.90 for 365 days.

By creating high awareness for its services, potential customers can directly contact them and interact and transact from the portal. Freelancers can also keep 100% of the fees they charge.

By the end of 2022, JOBJOM expects to have 10K employers, 10K job seekers and 10K freelancers on its platform.

“We believe this is the magic number to be the compounding factor,” the team said.

To increase adoption, they hope to collaborate with universities and local organizations, corporations, SMEs and multinationals in Malaysia.

In the long term, JobJom aims to achieve a 10% market penetration rate for 7.59 million active EPF contributors.

While JOBJOM is trying to borrow elements from existing solutions across the market, there is merit in providing solutions to those in the market which are somewhat missed.

While they intend to help employers post free job listings, they also need to ensure that they are able to offer a unique offer to job seekers to keep up with the demand.
