LinkedIn Debunks Algorithm Myths In New Video Series


LinkedIn is debunking common myths about how its algorithm works in a new series of videos over the next several weeks.

There are currently two episodes of ‘Mythbusting the Feed’ published, with at least two more confirmed to come.

The series aims to provide greater clarity about the types of content LinkedIn surfaces in people’s feeds by addressing misconceptions and assumptions.

This article has a quick recap of the two videos published so far, which are devoted to the following topics:

  • What does it mean to be professional when it comes to content on LinkedIn?

What kinds of conversation topics does LinkedIn feeds surface?

People are free to post anything they want on LinkedIn, but not all content gets equal visibility. LinkedIn feeds prefer to bring out certain types of posts than others, as is the case with most social media sites today.

LinkedIn explains in its video:

“We welcome all kinds of conversations on LinkedIn, but primarily we want to have conversations that people care about. Where the things they talk about, and the content that they generate It’s about doing things that are authentic to them, and resonate with them, but at the same time make them feel like they’re connected to their communities.”

Based on that statement, LinkedIn likes to surface feed content that is authentic and relatable to other people in your network.

Examples of such content could be discussions about working from home or the challenges of being a work-from-home parent.

LinkedIn notes that there has been an increase in posts of front-line workers talking about the challenges they face in today’s work environment, bringing visibility to the workforce on which people depend.

Finally, says LinkedIn posts about topics that might be hard to talk about are well known in the feed:

“Another thing we’ve seen is conversations that it can be difficult to talk about mental health and wellbeing, other than productivity and how people think about working, but what it really means to them.

We see LinkedIn as a place for that conversation, and our technical team is finding ways to enable it, to keep it safe, and to make members feel like it’s a place where they Can really talk about everything that is authentic to them.

Does LinkedIn only feed superficial ‘professional’ topics?

There is a misconception that LinkedIn posts should be strictly professional.

LinkedIn sees professional growth and personal development as intertwined, so it encourages both types of content.

There are times when professional milestones intersect with personal milestones, which gives your LinkedIn network a great opportunity to show who you are outside of work.

For example, maybe you overcame a lifetime fear of public speaking by giving a presentation at an industry conference.

It’s something that has a mix of personal content and professional content that will appear in LinkedIn people’s feeds.

In the video LinkedIn explains:

“Think of LinkedIn as a place for an authentic conversation and don’t limit it to one topic or another because a lot of those things go hand in hand.”
