Mumbai: Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Saturday said Virat Kohli’s fifty against Gujarat Titans in an IPL match on Saturday will serve as a much-needed confidence boost for the batsman as well as his team Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Several former cricketers, including former India coach Ravi Shastri, have suggested Kohli to take a break from the game but the former RCB captain hinted at a return to form in the match against Gujarat Titans.
Kohli, after enduring a series of setbacks (0, 0, 9 in his last three innings), eventually scored a half-century and Gavaskar said the half-century came at the right time for him and it was a confidence boost for those in trouble. Will do Batter.
Playing as a second fiddle to Rajat Patidar, who scored 52, the right-handed Kohli smashed a 53-ball 58. The duo added 99 runs for the second wicket to help RCB post. 170/6.
“This was the kind of knock he needed; It was a knock that even RCB wanted. Once you go ahead and get a half-century, it bodes well for the remaining matches as well. Your lead man is hitting the ball cleanly, feet fairly well positioned. It is a confidence boosting innings. Certainly, as far as RCB is concerned, they will be very happy,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
RCB captain Faf du Plessis also lauded Kohli’s efforts, “It was a big step in the right direction to get a solid 50. You want to bring one of your top four into the 70s in the future, So it’s good.”
RCB next take on Chennai Super Kings on May 4 and the team will be hoping that Kohli continues to score runs as they cannot slip-up any more in the tournament.
