CHENNAI: Indian sailors will have a busy schedule ahead as they will take part in two international events one after the other. To begin with, 17 men’s rowers will compete in the 2022 World Rowing Cup I in Belgrade, Serbia, from 27 to 29 May. The male participants will then be joined by women and para rowers for the 2022 World Rowing Cup II to be held in Poznan, Poland, from 17 to 19 June.

Presently, the male sailors are camping in Bhopal while their female counterparts are in an ongoing camp in Hyderabad. It is learned that the rovers were selected on the basis of their performance in the ongoing camps. The men’s team will travel out of the country to compete in the Serbian event on 23 May. The Indian contingent for the event includes two officials, five coaches and support staff. The team consists of Arvind Singh and Arjun Lal Jat, who represented the country at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last year. Zakar Khan, who missed the Olympic cut, will also take part in the competition, which is the first event of the 2022 World Cup series.

As far as the participation of women in the first event is concerned, Rowing Federation of India (RFI) President Rajalakshmi Singh Deo told that the coaches decided to skip the competition. “Their (women’s rowers) training program was designed keeping in mind the second event in Poland, which is why the coaches decided to miss the Serbian event. They will be better prepared for the second competition.”

The third and final event of the series is to be held in Lucerne, Switzerland from 8 to 10 July. However, Indian teams will not compete in this. “These exposure trips were planned keeping in mind the 2022 Asian Games. Since the third event was close to the Asiad, we had decided to skip it,” said the RFI president.

Upon return, the sailors will be discharged from the national camps, which will resume in August. However, upon resumption, the men’s camp will be shifted to Pune while the women’s camp will continue in Hyderabad.
