Google Using AI To Automatically Update Some Business Information

Google announced that it will use artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) models to automatically update business hours and real-world street information.

These initiatives aim to provide users with more updated information about neighborhood changes.

Harnessing the power of AI for more accurate information

Although research into AI began in the 1950s, it did not begin to make deep breakthroughs in learning until relatively recently. The main reason for this is that machine learning has made great progress after 2010.

“From my experience, I see that ML algorithms are no longer the bottleneck. To be sure, they are far from perfect, and there is a lot of work to be done, but this work is happening at breakneck speed,” says Edo Liberti, Amazon The former head of the Key AI Lab and the current CEO of Pinecone, a similarity search for a vector database. said in February 22 interview with Search Engine Journal.

In line with the rise of big data, these advances are allowing AI to progress with incredible speed.

Google is using AI to update business hours

COVID-19 Changed the way many businesses operate, which includes retailer and restaurant opening hours. To address these changes and better search engine users, Google has developed a machine learning model that automatically identifies if business hours are incorrect.

Once incorrect hours are identified, Google immediately updates a company’s business profile with AI-generated forecasts.

For example, a business’s profile might show that it’s closed on Mondays, but it hasn’t been updated in more than a year.

If Google determines that its busiest hours are typically Monday evenings, it will recognize that the hours are likely to be out of date and update them automatically.

It also uses Street View images of storefronts to identify hours of operation, enlisting the help of local guides and business owners to verify forecasts.

Google predicts that this technology will help update the hours of more than 20 million businesses worldwide within the next six months.

ML Updates Real-World Road Condition

Google also announced that it is experimenting with other ways to use images for AI and ML. Starting in the US, it is launching a third-party imagery pilot that will provide the most up-to-date speed limit information.

The goal of this technology is to improve driver safety and add details that can make driving more efficient. Google hopes to eventually add information about potholes, school areas, and construction.

Emphasis on privacy remains high

This pilot is built with secrecy as a key component. Reference images will only come from public roads. Participants will also be required to blur identification information, including faces and license plates.

Once Google receives an image, it blurs the photo again, which is then removed after Maps is updated.
