God Of War: Ragnarok Accessibility Features Detailed In New Blog Post

Santa Monica studio lead UX designer Mila Pavlin expands God of War: Ragnarok’s accessibility features to a new look playstation blog post To celebrate Global Accessibility Awareness Day.

The blog post highlights a selection of upcoming games’ 60-plus accessibility options that are designed to suit the needs of players, from subtitle and caption improvements to text and icon sizes, and more. Accessibility features are an important part of making sure everyone enjoys an experience in any game, and SMS likes to highlight these options in a dedicated blog post.

Pavlin writes in a blog post, “Not only have we redesigned our UI to allow for more flexibility and readability, but we’ve also revamped controller remapping from the ground up and added more to the interaction system than we have. Customization added.” “We’ve retained all of our accessibility features from 2018’s God of War and expanded on them to include over 60 ways to adjust gameplay that best fits your style and needs.”

Here’s an analysis of the accessibility features highlighted in Pavlin’s blog post:

Ragnarok has four returning accessibility features from the PC version of God of War:

  • sprint auto sprint: This allows you to not only press the stick forward once to auto sprint, but also set the duration of how long it lasts.
  • persistent dot (always on the reticle): It has a reticle on-screen at all times for those who need it or who need an extra focus point to reduce motion sickness.
  • objective style: Allows players to choose to use hold or toggle to toggle the target stance on/off.
  • block style: You can choose to either hold or toggle to turn Shield Stance on/off.

The following accessibility features are new to Ragnarok:

Subtitle and caption improvements

  • Subtitle and caption size: SMS has increased its minimum text size and added new scaling options including extra large text size. The game will also have a large text area to match TV and movie subtitle standards.
  • subtitle and caption color: Players can now adjust individual speaker names, subtitle body text, and caption colors. There will be seven colors to choose from.
  • Speaker’s name: Like God of War, you can show or hide speaker names and you can set this size independent of the UI text size.
  • captionSMS: SMS adds a number of new ways to understand in-game sounds, Pavlin writes. The studio added captions to both the cinematics and gameplay “to provide a rich understanding of the world’s soundscape.” Players can also enable captions for important gameplay information to aid in puzzle and narrative comprehension.
  • subtitle and caption background blur: SMS includes options to allow blurring of the background behind subtitles and captions to make them easier to read.
  • subtitle background: Like God of War, there will be options to darken the background behind subtitles for better readability on ice. High Contrast support also includes several opacity settings.
  • direction indicator: Important gameplay sounds will now have an optional direction indicator indicating which direction the sound is coming from. In addition, to aid in puzzles involving sound cues, this indicator will help orient you to the source of an important sound, Pavlin writes.

text and icon size

“The highly requested feature from God of War (2018) is back and better than ever,” Pavlin writes. “You asked for a comfortable reading experience while playing from the couch, so we listened. Text on-screen, with a completely re-engineered and responsive UI, and a large minimum text size that can scale up significantly It’s easier than ever to read.”

controller remapping

“We’ve revamped our controller remapping system so that you can customize your button configuration in God of War: Ragnarok,” Pavlin writes. “There will be a wide range of preset layouts, as well as custom controller remapping support. The individual buttons are swappable and for select complex actions, you can choose an alternate configuration from the preset list. Spartan Rage We offer a number of ways to customize your experience for certain tasks that require more than one button, including touch pad shortcuts for things like Navigation Assist and Quick Turns.

high contrast mode

Pavlin says that Ragnarok’s new high contrast color mode allows players to apply color to in-game objects such as targets, enemies, and other characters in addition to item types. When it is activated, color will be applied to the object or character to make them more visible against the background. You can also optionally desaturate the background to further enhance this effect.

  • High Contrast Activation Optimization: You can select Off, On, or Always On for gameplay only (this will exclude cinematics). High contrast mode can be set to toggle on and off with a swipe for easy access. This mode will be automatically disabled when Pavlin writes in the Settings menu or Characters menu.
  • High Contrast Color Customization: You can select a color palette that fits your playing style and also adjust the different colors for characters, enemies and items.
  • High Contrast Background Customization: You can select the mid-tone or dark background contrast levels individually.

Additional Accessibility Features

  • navigation aids: This camera navigation system is new to Ragnarok and allows players to look at the current objective on the compass. When not in combat, you can press the navigation aid button to orient your viewpoint to the next story goal.
  • travel assistance: Now you can automate gap jumping, vaulting, manteling and various other traversal features in the specific direction you press.
  • Help+: This setting adds interaction-based moves like climb, crawl, and squeeze-through.
  • audio clues: Pavlin says SMS has “linked a sound cue to each on-screen “interact” prompt so that when using this feature, you can hear when an interact icon is nearby, as well as when the button prompts gets activated.” These signals also extend to unblockable attack rings, target signals, and weapon swap signals, and the amounts of individual signals can be adjusted independently of each other.

“We are committed to improving accessibility and customization for all,” Pavlin writes. “We can’t wait to tell you the details about our other categories of accessibility features such as combat/aiming assist, puzzle/minigame assist, HUD adjustment, camera tuning, auto pick up, and more. God of War: We are extremely grateful to all of our Accessibility advisors and the greater Accessibility community for sharing their thoughts on making Ragnarok the most accessible war god ever. As we get closer to launch, we Can’t wait to share more with you.”
