Crawling and indexing websites is the first step in the complex process of understanding webpages in order to present them as answers to user questions.

Search engines are constantly improving how they crawl and index websites.

Understanding how Google and Bing perform the task of crawling and indexing websites is useful in developing strategies for improving search visibility.

Indexing is where the ranking process starts after the website is crawled.

Indexing essentially refers to adding the content of a webpage to Google in order to be considered for ranking.

When you create a new page on your site, there are several ways to get it indexed.

The simplest way to index a page is to do absolutely nothing.

Google has crawlers following links and thus, provided your site is already in the index and new content is linked from within your site, Google will eventually find it and add it to its index. More on this later.

But, what if you want Googlebot to get to your page faster?

This can be important if you have timely content or if you have made a significant change to a page that you need Google to know about.

I use faster methods when I’ve optimized an important page or I’ve adjusted the title and/or description to improve click-through. I specifically want to know when they were picked up and displayed in the SERPs to know where the measurement of improvement begins.

In these examples, there are a few additional methods you can use.

1. XML Sitemap

xml sitemap Content is the oldest and generally trusted way to get the attention of search engines.

An XML sitemap gives search engines a list of all the pages on your site, along with additional details about it, such as when it was last modified.

Definitely recommended!

But when you need to index a page quickly, it’s not particularly reliable.

2. Request Indexing With Google Search Console

In Search Console, you can “Request Indexing”.

You start by clicking on the top search field that reads, by default, “Inspect and URLs in domain.com.”

Enter the URL you want indexed, then press Enter.

If the page is already known to Google, you will be presented with a bunch of information on it. We won’t get into that here, but I recommend logging in and seeing what’s out there if you haven’t already.

Here for our purposes the important button appears whether the page is indexed or not – which means whether this content is good for search or requesting Google to understand the recent change.

You will get the button as shown below.

Within a few seconds to a few minutes, you can search for new content or URLs in Google and pick up the changes or new content.

3. Participate in Bing’s Index Now

Bing has an open protocol based on a push method of alerting search engines of new or updated content.

It is called push protocol because its idea is to use Index Now to alert search engines about new or updated content that will cause them to come and index it.

An example of a pull protocol is the old XML sitemap method which relies on a search engine crawler to decide to view and index it (or to be retrieved by Search Console).

The advantage of Index Now is that it wastes less web hosting and data center resources, which is not only eco-friendly but it also saves on bandwidth resources.

However, the biggest advantage is the fast indexing of the content.

IndexNow is currently only used by Bing and Yandex.

4. Bing Webmaster Tools

In addition to participating in IndexNow, consider a Bing Webmaster Tools account.

If you don’t have a Bing Webmaster Tools account, I can’t recommend it enough.

The information provided within is substantial and will help you better assess problem areas and improve your rankings on Bing, Google and elsewhere – and possibly even provide a better user experience.

But to get your content indexed all you have to do is click: Configure My Site > Submit URL.

From there you enter the URL you want indexed and click “Submit”.

crawl budget

we can’t really talk without talking about indexing crawl budget,

Basically, crawl budget is a term used to describe the amount of resources that Google will spend crawling a website.

The budget assigned is based on a combination of factors, the two central factors being:

  • How fast is your server (ie, how much Google can crawl without degrading your user experience).
  • How important is your site?

If you run a major news site with constantly updated content, search engine users will want to be aware that your site will be crawled frequently (dare I say… constantly).

If you run a small barbershop, you have a couple dozen links, and that’s not considered truly important in this context (you may be an important barber in the area but you don’t matter when it comes to crawl budget) are), then the budget will be less.

Google has two types of crawling
