Does Google Treat Unlinked Mentions Like Links?

In a Google SEO office hours hangout, someone asked Googler John Mueller about the status of articles that talked about his site, but didn’t mention a brand name or domain name associated with his site. He wanted to know if the mentions of his domain and brand name could give any indication.

John Mueller’s answer was clear and vague.

brand mention

The person asking the question mentioned domain names and if so Google uses them as links.

He explained his scenario of sites that are publishing articles that mention a domain or a brand name but do not link to actual websites.

“… Those mentions may be in the form of a brand name or it may be in the form of a person’s name.

…is Google still able to recognize those mentions, those names, and since they’re linked to the parent company or the current special of the brand they’re dealing with, does it… influence of …

Just because you are mentioned in some other places but you are not connected.”

It’s either a link or it’s not

Muller essentially answered the question by saying that a brand mention is not a link, so it would not be treated like a link.

Google’s John Mueller replied:

“I mean… First of all, if your pages don’t have a link then it’s not really a link there.

So it’s not something that we’ll see, like, oh, it’s half a link worth mentioning or something like that.

It is essentially, there is no link, so no signal is passing through like there would be a normal link.

So, I guess that’s the first thing to keep in mind.

It doesn’t mean that… kind of… these mentions are bad or that you need to avoid them or anything like that.

This is actually justified, we don’t treat these as links.

And that’s about it.

And it’s something where maybe users will pick up on that mention and they’ll search for your site and they’ll go to your site anyway.

But this is not a link to your site.

So it’s very different from that point of view.

I wouldn’t put them in the same category.”

Brand mention does not pass any signal

John Mueller was very clear that if a site mentions a brand or website domain then Google will not consider it as a link.

His answer was clear and clear:

“It’s essentially, there’s no link, so no signal is being passed…”

This means that if no signal is being passed it has zero ranking effect similar to links.
